In his testimony, Sutskever clarified that the board's loss of confidence in CEO Sam Altman was not sudden. He had begun contemplating Altman's replacement a full year before the November 2023 removal attempt. To substantiate claims of Altman's "persistent dishonesty," Sutskever spent that year conducting internal investigations and compiling evidence.
Reports indicate Sutskever ultimately presented the board with a detailed 52-page dossier. This document cataloged multiple instances of deceptive conduct, alleging Altman sought to consolidate absolute control by undermining fellow executives and deliberately fostering management discord. Sutskever also disclosed he had engaged in extensive, confidential discussions about the removal with then-Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati.
The November 2023 events were intensely dramatic. As a key board member, Sutskever helped orchestrate the removal. Yet, shortly afterward, amid immense pressure from employees and investors, he publicly expressed regret and reversed his position, voting to reinstate Altman.
The power struggle concluded with Altman's return and a board overhaul. Sutskever gradually receded from the core leadership in the aftermath. In 2024, he formally departed OpenAI to found a new venture, "Safe Superintelligence" (SSI), focused on developing safer AI.
