OpenAI Targets 2026 for Its First Hardware Launch, Expected to Be AI Earbuds

OpenAI generated significant excitement in the hardware space last year following its acquisition of former Apple design chief Jony Ive's startup, io. The company remains secretive about the product details, but OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, stated during an Axios panel at Davos that the AI firm is on schedule to unveil its first hardware device in the latter half of this year.
Last November, Sam Altman hinted that the potential device would offer a more "peaceful and calm" experience compared to iPhones. Earlier reports indicate OpenAI is aiming to develop a pocket-sized device without a screen.
While the company isn't revealing specifics, more recent leaks and reports from Asian media suggest OpenAI's inaugural device may be a pair of earbuds. According to these sources, the device, codenamed "Sweet Pea," will feature a distinct design compared to current earbuds. It is expected to run on a custom 2-nanometer processor, enabling it to handle AI tasks locally without relying on cloud servers.
A separate report from a major Taiwanese newspaper indicated that OpenAI is exploring a manufacturing partnership with China's Luxshare, though it may ultimately choose Taiwan's Foxconn. The report also stated OpenAI targets shipping 40 to 50 million units in the first year of sales.
While ChatGPT boasts nearly a billion weekly users, OpenAI currently depends on other devices and platforms for distribution. By launching its own hardware, the company could gain greater control over the development and distribution of its AI assistant, potentially introducing exclusive, purpose-built features.
However, displacing established earbuds like AirPods in users' daily routines will be difficult without deep integration into existing operating systems.
To date, no AI-centric device has achieved breakout success. Last year, the Humane AI Pin was sold to HP. Rabbit's device continues its journey after the initial 2024 buzz faded. Similarly, the Friend AI companion necklace faced swift backlash over its marketing approach.
