Musk’s Grok: 1.5 Trillion Parameters and Cursor Code Absorption—Game Changer or Bluff?
Elon Musk is finally making a move.
In the AI programming race, OpenAI and Anthropic are accelerating, while xAI appears to be lagging. Musk has often stated his aim to rival Claude, yet despite multiple updates to the Grok4.X series, the results look good on paper but fall short in practice, and the gap has barely closed.
However, this time he has a new card to play.

Musk confirmed on X that a new version of Grok is on the way. The internal code name for the ninth version of the base model is complete, boasting up to 1.5 trillion parameters, and is slated for official release within 3 to 4 weeks. He called this update a 'banger,' signaling strong confidence. However, without any benchmark data yet, the real-world performance will only be known after launch.
Notably, the training 'recipe' is worth highlighting. Musk previously admitted that the existing Grok4.3 had data deficiencies, and the new version will undergo a special supplementary training phase, absorbing a large volume of Cursor's code data to address these gaps. Once a solid knowledge base is established, it will be refined through repeated cycles of supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning (RL).
The key term here is Cursor. Not long ago, Musk reached a cooperation agreement with this popular coding tool, providing computing resources, and there have also been reports of a potential acquisition for around $20 billion. It's a mutual benefit: xAI gains access to vast amounts of high-quality code data, while Cursor receives strong computing power support—a classic complementary partnership.
Whether it can truly catch up with Claude remains to be seen. But at least this time, Musk has more than just a slogan to offer.
