On August 23, reports from Nandu Wancaishe highlight that during the men's 400-meter final of the large-group athletics event at the second World Humanoid Robot Games, Huawei's proprietary humanoid robot, "Lightning," clocked an impressive 39.45 seconds, shattering the existing human world record for the 400-meter distance.
Previously, South African sprinter Wayde van Niekerk established the world record of 43.03 seconds at the 2016 Rio Olympics, a mark he continues to hold. Following the race, Van Niekerk offered a supportive thumbs-up and extended his best wishes to "Lightning."
In the earlier preliminary round, "Lightning" completed the 100-meter dash in 9.32 seconds, reaching a peak velocity of 14.5 meters per second. Both metrics surpass Usain Bolt's human 100-meter record of 9.58 seconds and the fastest recorded human peak speed. The performance video garnered significant attention, including likes and shares from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Earlier this year, in April, "Lightning" secured victory in the semi-marathon category at the 2026 Yizhuang Humanoid Robot Marathon in Beijing, finishing with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This performance exceeded the human world record for the half marathon, which stands at 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
According to Huawei, "Lightning's" advanced high-speed mobility stems from enhanced joint module torque and response speeds, alongside innovations such as topology optimization and a re-engineered leg structure.
