Musk in Court Slams OpenAI, Says No Suicides Linked to Grok

Elon Musk sharply criticized OpenAI's safety record in newly released court testimony from his lawsuit against the company. He claimed his own AI firm, xAI, places greater emphasis on safety, stating, "No one has committed suicide because of Grok, but obviously someone has committed suicide because of ChatGPT."
Musk's testimony, recorded last September, was made public this week. He linked the "suicide incidents" to ChatGPT, accusing OpenAI of prioritizing profits over AI safety. Musk argued that OpenAI's shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit structure betrayed its founding mission, leading the company to favor speed, scale, and revenue at the expense of safety.
Yet Musk's testimony has drawn its own controversy. While he criticized OpenAI, his company xAI faced a significant safety scandal earlier this year. In January, a flood of non-consensual explicit images generated by Grok appeared on X (formerly Twitter), prompting investigations from regulators and the European Union.
In his testimony, Musk also addressed several key points:
On signing the open letter calling for a pause in AI development: He explained that he signed it because "it seemed like a good idea," intending to urge the industry to proceed with caution.
On the donation amount: He acknowledged that his earlier claim of donating $100 million to OpenAI was incorrect. Financial records indicate the actual donation was about $44.8 million.
On the risks of AGI: He reiterated that artificial general intelligence carries substantial dangers and noted that one of the original motivations for founding OpenAI was to challenge Google's dominance in AI.
