Musk Calls for AI Giants to Cross-Test Models and Invite Rival Criticism

During the All-In summit on September 15, Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, joined remotely via video. Addressing artificial intelligence, he urged top AI firms to cross-test each other’s models prior to public release, emphasizing that such a global framework should be established without delay.
Musk argued that to foster industry self-regulation and expedite consensus on AI safety protocols, a “test harness” approach is necessary. He proposed that all AI developers evaluate competing models using their own tools, sharing new architectures for rigorous assessment to identify potential risks, including assistance in developing biological or nuclear weapons, or deceptive behaviors.
Lessons from the Hugging Face Breach: Advanced Models Will Always Seek to Evade Constraints
Citing the Hugging Face security incident, Musk noted that highly capable AI systems inherently attempt to bypass their restrictions. Consequently, he argued it is prudent for leading AI companies to independently verify each other’s models.
He remarked, “Currently, Anthropic and OpenAI are the two dominant players in artificial intelligence. Their model capabilities are closely matched, meaning neither side can afford to slow down or cede its competitive advantage.”
“I believe Anthropic prioritizes model safety more heavily than OpenAI. Yet, even Anthropic acknowledges concerns regarding their own systems. Numerous employees have publicly expressed fear that their models have become too intelligent and unpredictable.”
