Mistral Encourages Telcos to Enter Hyperscaler Market

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mistral's CEO Arthur Mensch made a compelling case for telecoms to dive into the AI game. He urged them to invest in data center infrastructure and become "hyperscalers" to bolster the regional AI ecosystem. "We'd love to see more local efforts in building data centers," he said during a Q&A session, emphasizing Europe's need to ramp up AI investments.
Mistral is putting its money where its mouth is by constructing its own data center in France. Mensch pointed out that they're "moving slightly down the stack" to better serve these data centers. He sees the AI revolution as a chance to decentralize the cloud, pushing for more players in a market currently dominated by Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
Mensch encouraged European companies to lean towards homegrown tech solutions, while acknowledging the necessity to be "pragmatic" given the lack of non-U.S. alternatives for some key tech infrastructure. When asked about regulatory inspiration from the Trump administration, he sidestepped a direct critique of the EU's AI Act, instead highlighting the real challenge: the fragmented market across the EU's 27 Member States. "As a startup, we're not too hung up on regulations," he noted, "but the market fragmentation in Europe is a real hassle."
He also threw his support behind consolidation in the telecom sector, suggesting that fewer telcos per EU market could streamline partnership negotiations. So, what's Mistral hoping to gain from telecoms? Mensch explained that AI will shake up network operations, requiring infrastructure upgrades to handle the increasingly "personalized" data streams. This opens up opportunities for network upgrade collaborations and "distribution partnerships" to ensure widespread access to robust AI systems.
In France, Mistral has already inked a deal with Free for Le Chat, their AI assistant. Free subscribers get a year of Le Chat Pro for free, then it's the usual monthly fee. It's worth mentioning that Free is part of Iliad, owned by Xavier Niel, a French billionaire who's also invested in Mistral.
Mensch also mentioned that AI could help telcos cut down on operating costs. On the regulatory front, he admitted things aren't perfect but they're manageable. He welcomed a shift in EU policymakers' views on the need to invest in AI. "The EU AI Act might've come a bit too soon and it's too tech-focused," he said, adding they're working with regulators to sort out implementation issues.
Looking ahead, Mensch predicted AI models will get more "specialized." Over the next few years, Mistral aims to capture data from every human-model interaction to build better, more personalized AI systems.

Mistral's pitch to telcos sounds like a pipe dream. Telcos can't even keep their networks running smoothly, and now they want to build hyperscale data centers? Good luck with that! 😂
Interesante propuesta de Mistral para las telecoms! 🤔 Pero construir data centers no es cualquier cosa... Será que las operadoras están listas para competir con gigantes como AWS y Google? Al menos en Europa, una opción local podría tener sentido. #CloudComputing
