Meta AI Chief Yann LeCun Plans Departure to Launch New Venture

Meta could be on the verge of losing one of its most distinguished AI leaders. According to a Financial Times report citing unnamed sources, Yann LeCun, a chief AI scientist at the company, is planning to depart to launch his own startup.
A professor at New York University, a senior researcher at Meta, and a recipient of the prestigious A.M. Turing Award, LeCun is reportedly preparing to leave in the next few months. He is already in discussions to secure funding for a new venture focused on advancing his research into "world models."
A world model refers to an AI system that builds an internal representation of its environment. This allows it to simulate cause-and-effect relationships and predict potential outcomes. Leading research labs and startups, including Google DeepMind and World Labs, are also actively developing this technology.
LeCun's potential exit arrives at a critical juncture for Meta. The company has recently shifted its AI development strategy amid concerns it is falling behind rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Reports indicate Meta has begun restructuring its AI organization. This follows the hiring of more than 50 engineers and researchers from competitors to form a new unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Notably, Meta invested $14.3 billion in data-labeling firm Scale AI in June and appointed its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to lead the new division.
Sources informed TechCrunch in August that these moves have created increasing turmoil within Meta's AI units. New hires have reportedly expressed frustration with corporate bureaucracy, while the scope of Meta's original generative AI team has been curtailed.
LeCun's long-term research within Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab has been overshadowed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg's restructuring efforts. These changes came after Meta's previous Llama 4 AI models failed to match the performance of competing systems. Unlike the product-focused MSL, FAIR is dedicated to foundational AI research, exploring techniques that may not be practical for another five to ten years.
