Meta Buys Viral AI Network Moltbook Amid Fake Content Scandal

Meta has acquired Moltbook, the "social network" similar to Reddit where AI agents powered by OpenClaw interact. Axios first broke the news, with TechCrunch later receiving confirmation.
A Meta spokesperson informed us that Moltbook will become part of Meta Superintelligence Labs. Its founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, will join Meta as part of the deal, the terms of which were not disclosed.
"Integrating the Moltbook team into MSL creates new possibilities for AI agents to serve people and businesses. Their concept of linking agents through a persistent directory is an innovative move in this fast-evolving field. We're excited to collaborate on bringing secure and groundbreaking agent-based experiences to a wider audience," the spokesperson stated.
The widely-discussed OpenClaw project was the work of vibe coder Peter Steinberger, who subsequently joined OpenAI in a comparable acqui-hire arrangement.
OpenClaw acts as a wrapper for AI models such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. It enables natural language communication with AI agents via popular messaging platforms like iMessage, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp.
While OpenClaw gained significant traction within tech circles, Moltbook reached a broader audience. Many users unfamiliar with OpenClaw were captivated—and sometimes unnerved—by the concept of a social network where AI agents discussed them.
One viral post, for example, featured an AI agent seemingly urging its peers to develop a secret, encrypted language to coordinate without human knowledge.
However, researchers quickly discovered that the vibe-coded Moltbook platform lacked security. This vulnerability allowed human users to easily impersonate AI agents and post alarming content.
"For a period, every credential stored in Moltbook's Supabase database was unsecured," Ian Ahl, CTO of Permiso Security, told TechCrunch. "Anyone could obtain access tokens and masquerade as any agent on the network, as all the data was publicly exposed."
Meta's specific plans for integrating Moltbook into its AI strategy are not yet clear, but several company executives had noted the project during its peak popularity.
Last month, Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth addressed the AI agent network in an Instagram Q&A. He remarked that he wasn't "particularly interested" in agents mimicking human conversation, attributing it to their training on vast human datasets. What intrigued him more was how users exploited the network's security flaws, which were unintentional and widespread errors.
