Meta AI will soon train on EU users’ data

Meta has recently revealed its plans to train its AI using data from EU users of its platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. This initiative will tap into public posts, comments, and even chat histories with Meta AI, but rest assured, your private messages with friends and family are off-limits. This training will only involve users who are over 18 years old, according to the company.
Starting this week, Meta will begin notifying its EU users about this through in-app notifications and emails. These notices will come with a link to an objection form, giving users the chance to opt out if they wish. You can find this link in Meta's privacy policy, which currently mentions that the company is still holding off on these plans due to feedback from regulators. Last year, Meta had to pause its AI-training efforts in Europe after a request from Irish regulators.
Why is Meta Doing This?
Meta aims to tailor its AI models to better reflect the regions where they're used. This means capturing everything from local dialects and colloquialisms to unique cultural knowledge and the specific ways humor and sarcasm are expressed in different countries. This is particularly important for multi-modal AI, which deals with text, voice, video, and imagery.
Previous AI Training Initiatives
This move follows Meta's announcement last year about training its AI models on data from British users. Both EU and UK users enjoy stronger protections regarding their personal data online compared to users in the US. However, what Meta will gain from users now is minor compared to what it has already amassed. The company admitted last year that it had used all publicly posted text and photos from adult Facebook users since 2007 to train its AI.
What to Do If You're Concerned
If you're worried about your data being used, keep an eye out for Meta's notifications and use the objection form if you want to opt out. It's important to stay informed about how your data is being used, especially with such significant implications for privacy and AI development.

Wow, Meta's diving deep into EU user data for AI training? Kinda cool but also a bit creepy. Public posts are fair game, I guess, but using chat histories feels like a privacy tightrope. 😬 Hope they’re careful with this!
