AI Fuels Speculation in Online Hunt for Charlie Kirk's Alleged Shooter
Earlier today, the FBI posted two grainy photos on X depicting a person of interest in the shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Almost instantly, numerous users replied with AI-upscaled, "enhanced" versions, transforming the pixelated surveillance shots into sharp, high-resolution images. However, AI tools don't uncover hidden details in blurry pictures; they infer what might be there—and have a history of generating things that don't exist.
Countless AI-generated variations appeared beneath the original posts, some seemingly created with X's own Grok bot and others with tools like ChatGPT. Their plausibility varies widely, with some clearly inaccurate—like one "AI-based textual rendering" showing a completely different shirt and an exaggerated, chiseled jawline. While ostensibly intended to help identify the person, these images also serve as attention-grabbing content for likes and reposts.
Yet, it's unlikely any of these AI versions are more helpful than the FBI's original photos. In previous cases, AI upscaling has "depixelated" a low-res image of President Barack Obama into a white man and added a non-existent lump to President Donald Trump's head. The technology extrapolates from existing data to fill in gaps, which can be useful in specific contexts, but should never be treated as reliable evidence in an investigation.
