Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto VI launch postponed to May 2026

Rockstar Games is postponing the much-awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026. Originally slated for a fall 2025 release, the studio now states the team requires additional time “to achieve the quality standards our fans expect and deserve.”
We sincerely apologize for this delayed timeline. The incredible enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto has been profoundly humbling for our entire development team. We deeply appreciate your support and patience as we finalize the game.
With every title we release, our goal remains the same: to push beyond expectations. Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We trust you’ll understand that this extra time is essential to meet the quality bar you anticipate and merit.
We can’t wait to share further updates with you in the near future.

The first GTA VI trailer debuted in December 2023, and information since then has been sparse beyond the narrowed release window—now shifted to next year. This new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series will return to Vice City and introduce the franchise's first female lead, Lucia, in a narrative inspired by the Bonnie and Clyde saga.
GTA VI remains one of the most eagerly anticipated releases, and further insight into the delay may emerge during parent company Take-Two’s upcoming earnings report on May 15. Following the announcement, Take-Two’s stock fell 8 percent in premarket NASDAQ trading.
Even 11 years after its debut, Grand Theft Auto V continues to draw massive engagement, recently topping Twitch as the most-watched game of 2024.
