Grammarly Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of AI Email Platform Superhuman

On Tuesday, Grammarly announced its acquisition of the email client Superhuman, a strategic move to enhance the AI capabilities within its productivity suite. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed by either company.
Superhuman was established by Rahul Vohra, Vivek Sodera, and Conrad Irwin. According to data from Traxcn, a venture analytics firm, the company secured over $114 million in funding from investors such as a16z, IVP, and Tiger Global, reaching a valuation of $825 million in its last funding round.
"By integrating Superhuman, we can bring this future to millions more professionals while offering our current users a unique platform for agent collaboration that is not available elsewhere. Email is far more than just an application; it's a central hub where professionals dedicate a large part of their day, making it an ideal environment for managing multiple AI agents at once," stated Shishir Malhotra, Grammarly's CEO, in a press release.
As part of this acquisition, CEO Rahul Vohra and the rest of the Superhuman team are transitioning to roles at Grammarly.
"Email serves as the primary communication tool for billions globally and is the most common application among Grammarly's user base. Partnering with Grammarly enables us to further develop the core Superhuman experience and pioneer a new operational model where AI agents work together across the everyday communication platforms we all rely on," commented Rahul Vohra, CEO of Superhuman, in a statement.
In recent months, Superhuman introduced several AI-driven features for scheduling, crafting replies, and organizing emails. Grammarly’s announcement highlighted plans to leverage Superhuman's technology in developing AI agents specifically for email management. The company emphasized that email continues to be one of the most critical use cases for Grammarly.
Last year, Grammarly acquired the collaborative productivity platform Coda, and as part of that transaction, promoted Coda’s co-founder, Shishir Malhotra, to the position of CEO.
In May, Grammarly secured $1 billion from General Catalyst through a non-dilutive financing arrangement. Instead of exchanging equity, the company will repay General Catalyst with a fixed percentage of the revenue generated using the invested capital.
