Google Creative Chief Skeptical of AI Hype for Veo 3.1 Update

Google Creative Chief Skeptical of AI Hype for Veo 3.1 Update

According to Henry Daubrez, Creative Director at Google Labs and the company’s Filmmaker-in-Residence, the massive financial investments in artificial intelligence are transforming even minor product enhancements into overhyped media moments—with Google’s own Veo 3.1 video model serving as a key illustration.

In a recent social media post, Daubrez described the Veo 3.1 release as fundamentally incremental, despite media coverage framing it as a major leap forward. He noted that the intense financial pressure surrounding AI leads companies to promote modest updates as revolutionary breakthroughs. While Veo 3.1 adds helpful features like image-to-video animation, Daubrez sees these as evolutionary, not transformative.

Google launched Veo 3.1 on October 15, 2025, through a paid preview available via the Gemini API, Vertex AI, and the Flow filmmaking platform. This release extends video length to 60 seconds at 1080p, introduces richer integrated audio with sound effects and natural dialogue, and adds editing tools such as scene extension and frame interpolation. Two versions are offered: Veo 3.1 for higher quality, and Veo 3.1 Fast for quicker generation.

Daubrez's comments reflect a wider industry trend as the AI sector enters a period of financial transition. Investment is moving away from speculative projects toward applications that deliver measurable return on investment.

At the same time, infrastructure spending by leading AI firms has reached unprecedented levels, increasing the pressure to demonstrate tangible business outcomes. Open-source models have made many core AI capabilities widely accessible, reducing profit margins for commercial providers and pushing marketing to focus on practical value rather than technical spectacle.

Daubrez joined Google Labs as Filmmaker-in-Residence in 2025, with 18 years of experience integrating traditional storytelling with new technology. The Belgian creative director and CEO of Dogstudio/DEPT has directed award-winning projects using Google’s Veo models, such as the short film “KITSUNE,” which involved curating over 1,700 AI-generated clips. In his role, he helps shape the development of Flow to address real-world creative needs and leads Flow Sessions, a mentorship initiative that gives selected filmmakers access to the tool.

His public skepticism regarding the Veo 3.1 rollout is noteworthy given his dual role as both a Google insider and a proponent of thoughtful, creator-oriented AI tools. These remarks highlight the tension between marketing narratives that accompany AI launches and the day-to-day realities faced by creative professionals.

Veo 3.1 builds upon the Veo 3 model released in May 2025. Upgrades include the ability to insert or remove objects and characters with automatic lighting and shadow adjustment, seamless multi-prompt transitions, and improved identity and camera controls.

Daubrez’s perspective suggests that even those involved in developing and promoting AI tools are aware of the disconnect between marketing claims and actual technical progress—a gap that may grow as financial oversight tightens and the industry shifts from hype-driven releases to sustainable value creation.
