When Google integrates a moonshot project into its core business, it isn't just tidying up—it's making a strategic investment. On February 25, Intrinsic, an Alphabet subsidiary focused on developing AI models and software to simplify industrial robotics, officially became part of Google.
The team will continue to operate as a separate unit within Google, collaborating closely with Google DeepMind and leveraging Gemini AI models and Google Cloud infrastructure. No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed.
While this may appear to be a standard corporate restructuring, it represents a much more significant shift.
From Moonshot to Mandate
Intrinsic became an independent Alphabet company in 2021 after five years of incubation within X, Alphabet's moonshot research division—the same innovation hub that gave rise to Waymo and Wing. From the outset, its mission has been to make AI-driven industrial robotics accessible to manufacturers without dedicated engineering teams.
Although hardware such as robotic arms has become more affordable, programming them remains highly complex. This process often demands hundreds of hours of custom coding by specialized engineers, tailored to each specific robot model. Intrinsic’s solution is Flowstate—a web-based platform that enables users to develop robotic applications without writing extensive code.
The platform is designed to be hardware-, software-, and AI-model-agnostic. Rather than a standalone product, think of it as an operating layer—one that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has reportedly likened to Android. “He described it as the Android of robotics,” said Intrinsic CEO Wendy Tan White, noting Pichai’s prior involvement with Chrome and Android before becoming CEO.
Why Now, and Why Google?
The timing of this move is strategic. Google has been steadily building its robotics expertise—hiring Boston Dynamics’ CTO, launching a standalone robotics SDK, and now integrating Intrinsic. Together, these steps consolidate robotics capabilities within Google’s core operations, positioning the company to offer manufacturers a uniquely integrated solution: AI models from DeepMind, deployment software from Intrinsic, and cloud infrastructure from Google Cloud—all available through a single provider.
Last month, Google also partnered with Boston Dynamics to incorporate Gemini into Atlas humanoid robots designed for manufacturing settings, following the hiring of Boston Dynamics’ former CTO by Google DeepMind in November.
The industrial robotics AI market that Google is targeting is substantial. According to McKinsey, the general-purpose robotics market could reach US$370 billion by 2040.
Implications for Enterprise
For enterprise leaders, the key takeaway isn't just the technology—it's the shift toward greater accessibility. Google aims to integrate Intrinsic’s robotics development platform and vision models into its broader AI ecosystem. This will combine advanced reasoning, perception, and learning capabilities with industrial-grade robotics software, enabling machines to better interpret sensor data, adapt to changing environments, and perform complex tasks.
Intrinsic has also grown through acquisitions, including its 2022 purchase of Open Source Robotics Corp., the commercial arm of the foundation behind the Robot Operating System (ROS). Its commercial progress is already underway: in October 2025, Intrinsic entered a strategic partnership with Foxconn to develop general-purpose intelligent robots aimed at full factory automation in electronics manufacturing.
White framed the integration in terms that will resonate with business leaders: improved production economics, operational transformation, and what she called truly advanced manufacturing—all made possible with Google’s infrastructure fully supporting the effort.
That’s an ambitious vision. But with Gemini, DeepMind, and Google Cloud now aligned behind it, the foundational infrastructure to realize that vision is finally in place.
