Google scrapes standalone AI Studio, folding it entirely into Gemini after 800K users pre-order
Google is notorious for retiring products, yet this time, even an unreleased app was canceled. Google AI Studio, which debuted at Google I/O, was scrapped just before launch, despite 800,000 pre-orders across 168 countries on the App Store and Google Play.
Originally, the app was designed for Android and iOS, enabling developers to build, test, and launch AI apps on mobile devices. The Google AI Studio team announced on social media that, rather than asking users to download another standalone app, they are integrating core features directly into the Gemini app.
Integrating rather than abandoning: Gemini as a hub
Features were not discarded but embedded into the Gemini app on mobile and desktop. Google aims to make Gemini a comprehensive hub, allowing AI app creation and prototyping to emerge naturally during everyday smart conversations. Both consumers and developers will soon access customized app development through daily Gemini interactions.
For the 800,000 pre-order users, the standalone AI Studio client is no longer available, but core features will be integrated into future Gemini updates. Meanwhile, the web version of Google AI Studio remains active, receiving ongoing investment to serve professional developers and creators transitioning from creativity to commercialization. This shift from a standalone app to an integrated feature reflects an industry trend: AI assistants generating apps may render standalone developer tools obsolete, replacing them with a "conversation is development" paradigm.
