Google I/O unveils Gemini integration with Volvo EX60 camera for multimodal visual perception
At the recent Google I/O event, Google and Volvo announced a major partnership: the Gemini AI assistant will be integrated with the external camera hardware of Volvo's upcoming all-electric SUV, the EX60. This integration marks a significant step as Gemini gains visual and mobility perception capabilities, bringing together AI large models and smart car hardware in a concrete breakthrough.

This upgrade is possible because Volvo's vehicle operating system is built on Google's Android Automotive OS, which gives Gemini system-level access to the external camera data stream, enabling real-time perception and intelligent interaction with the car's physical surroundings.
The first application focuses on common parking challenges: Gemini will accurately translate and interpret complex parking signs for drivers. Beyond that, Google envisions a more ambitious future for in-vehicle AI, where Gemini with visual capabilities can identify road markings, understand traffic signs, and answer questions about nearby landmarks or restaurants. The system will also proactively inform drivers about time limits, permit requirements, and other restrictions based on context. Patrick Brady, Vice President of Google's Android Automotive division, noted that Gemini's deeper understanding of the driving environment will greatly improve convenience.
From an industry perspective, combining large models with in-vehicle cameras transforms traditional voice- or text-based "co-pilot assistants" into "AI in-car companions" with spatial awareness, offering a new multimodal paradigm for smart cabin evolution.
