Google Docs introduces an innovative AI-powered text-to-speech feature that transforms written documents into customizable audio experiences. The newly released functionality allows users to generate natural-sounding voiceovers from their text content with adjustable voices and playback speeds.
Accessible to both creators and collaborators, this audio conversion capability appears under Tools > Audio > Listen to this tab in shared documents. Authors can further enhance accessibility by embedding a dedicated audio player directly within their files through Insert > Audio - providing readers with one-click listening convenience.
While Google initially previewed document-to-podcast conversion capabilities in April, the current implementation focuses on practical, on-demand listening experiences. Currently limited to English-language documents on desktop platforms, the feature represents Google's ongoing investment in AI-powered productivity tools.
The audio generation functionality is currently rolling out to Workspace subscribers with Business, Enterprise, or Education plans, as well as individuals holding AI Pro and Ultra tier subscriptions. This rollout strategy positions the feature as a premium enhancement for professional and educational users who can benefit most from multi-modal document interaction.
Notably, this development transforms Google Docs into a more versatile platform for consuming written content, particularly benefiting:
