Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter, disclosed in the latest "Power On" newsletter that John Giannandrea, Apple’s former AI chief, is concluding his leave of absence this week, finalizing his exit. This shift became apparent in March 2025 when Apple scaled back his AI duties, making his departure widely expected.
Gurman noted that the restructuring stems from Apple Intelligence underperforming. With Siri upgrades delayed and the company trailing in generative AI, Giannandrea lost oversight of Siri, robotics, and key AI teams, significantly diminishing his role in Apple’s AI strategy.
In December 2025, Apple announced Giannandrea’s planned 2026 retirement. His duties were redistributed to Craig Federighi (software), Eddie Cue (services), and Sabih Khan (operations), creating a decentralized AI governance model.
Since losing his core responsibilities, Giannandrea has operated in a consultant capacity, a common tech industry practice allowing executives to wait for stock options to vest. With the next vesting date on April 15, his official tenure concludes this week.
This leadership change signals Apple’s strategic pivot amid fierce generative AI competition. By reallocating resources and restructuring management, Apple aims to accelerate innovation, though the impact on execution efficiency will depend on future product outcomes.
