Denmark Fights AI Cheating With Oral Defenses and Live Screen Monitoring

Danish high schools have witnessed a sharp rise in AI-assisted cheating during this summer’s exam period. As generative AI becomes integrated into classrooms, students increasingly rely on it for homework and exams, creating significant challenges for traditional assessment models. In response, the Danish government has implemented an emergency strategy featuring oral defenses and real-time screen monitoring to prevent academic dishonesty.
Regulate AI in schools rather than banning it
The new guidelines require approximately 9,000 students annually to undergo oral defenses alongside written exams. Authorities also recommend monitoring computer screens during tests, using web filters to block unauthorized sites, and requiring students to complete written work within supervised school settings.
While AI cheating poses serious issues, educators, students, and parents agree that simply excluding AI from schools is not the answer; instead, a balanced approach to its usage is needed. This shift mirrors global trends: Australian universities have recently overhauled assessment methods, reintroducing oral exams and in-person tests to preserve degree credibility, while Seoul, South Korea, banned AI-enabled smart glasses during final exams in June.
