Dell CEO Warns of Global AI Memory Shortage as Demand Soars

Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, recently issued a stark warning, highlighting explosive growth in memory demand within the global AI accelerator market. He forecasts this demand will surge 625-fold by 2028 compared to 2023 levels. This near-"quantum leap" in demand is exerting unprecedented pressure on the global semiconductor supply chain, with the imbalance between supply and demand unlikely to be resolved in the near term.
Dual Surge in Capacity and Scale
This dramatic increase is driven by simultaneous growth in per-unit capacity and overall deployment scale. As AI technology rapidly advances, the memory configuration of a single AI accelerator is projected to jump from 80GB in 2023 to 2TB by 2028—a 25-fold increase. Concurrently, to meet the soaring global demand for computing power, the total number of AI accelerators deployed in data centers is also expected to expand 25-fold. The combination of these two factors is creating exponential market demand.
Short-Term Production Bottlenecks Persist
The global memory industry is currently in a critical recovery phase from a cyclical low, yet production capacity is struggling to keep pace with demand. Establishing and bringing a new memory chip fab online typically requires about four years. Furthermore, leading manufacturers are exercising caution in capacity expansion, leading to slow progress in front-end manufacturing output. Despite market risks like rising prices and extended procurement cycles, memory shortages are expected to persist until at least 2028, fueled by strong global initiatives for sovereign AI development.
