ChatGPT's New AI Study Mode Guides Learning Beyond Direct Answers

OpenAI is launching a new study mode for ChatGPT designed to guide users through complex problems one step at a time instead of delivering answers outright, the company announced in a blog post. The feature rolls out today for ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with ChatGPT Edu users gaining access within the coming weeks.
With study mode enabled, ChatGPT provides interactive prompts that blend Socratic questioning, tailored hints, and reflection exercises to help users explore their queries more deeply. Responses are structured into clearly defined sections that emphasize connections across topics, and lessons are personalized based on skill-level checks and past conversation history. The tool also includes quiz functionality to test understanding.
As AI firms vie for student adoption, OpenAI’s move follows rival Anthropic, which introduced a "Learning mode" for Claude in April. Features like study mode may promote genuine learning over quick answers. However, students can deactivate study mode at any time—meaning the responsibility lies with them to engage with the feature instead of simply requesting a response or misusing the tool. Currently, OpenAI does not offer controls for parents or school administrators to lock study mode on, confirmed Leah Belsky, VP of Education, in an interview with TechCrunch.
According to OpenAI, the study mode relies on custom system instructions developed in collaboration with educators, scientists, and pedagogy specialists. Using custom instructions allows OpenAI to rapidly refine the experience using student feedback, even if it occasionally causes variation or errors across conversations. Future updates will introduce improved visualizations, cross-chat goal tracking, and more extensive personalization features.
In related developments, Google also unveiled new capabilities for its AI tools today that support learning. Its AI Mode in Search now offers a canvas mode for creating study guides, while NotebookLM’s Video Overviews feature can automatically generate narrated slideshows.
