Using ChatGPT to Summarize Books, Articles, and Research Papers: A Guide

Struggling to keep up with your reading, especially if you're dealing with ADHD, can be a real challenge. When you're swamped with school or work projects and time is ticking away, AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be a lifesaver. They can break down long articles, research papers, and even books into digestible summaries, making them much easier to tackle.

By the way, did you know you can now chat with ChatGPT over the phone without needing Wi-Fi? It's a game-changer for staying connected on the go!

ChatGPT has evolved significantly since its debut in 2022, especially with the addition of web browsing capabilities last spring. But remember, AI isn't perfect. While it can now provide citations, they might not always be spot-on. Plus, AI can't quite grasp the nuanced or abstract elements of literature the way a human can, so you might miss out on some deeper themes or details.

Think of ChatGPT as a handy tool to make dense texts more manageable. If you're using it for other aspects of your work, like writing, be cautious. With the ongoing concerns about plagiarism and copyright, it's not wise to let chatbots do your writing for you.

Whether you're a student crafting a research paper, someone eager to explore a lengthy article, or diving into a complex subject, ChatGPT can simplify the process for you.

How to Create Summaries with ChatGPT

What you'll need: A device with internet access, an OpenAI account (free or paid), and a basic understanding of the material you want to summarize.

The process should take about one to three minutes.

1. Find Your Material to Summarize

If you're using ChatGPT to summarize an article or research paper, locate the text online and keep it open in another tab. You can also just provide the book title and author directly to ChatGPT.

2. Log into ChatGPT

Open your preferred web browser and navigate to chatgpt.com. Log in or sign up for an account if you haven't already.

3. Make Your Request

In the chat box, type "Summarize [book title]." For instance, "Summarize Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman," or "Summarize this article: [URL]."

With ChatGPT's ability to provide sources, you can also request background info on a topic. If you're writing about cognition, you might ask, "Explain how personal experiences impact cognition and provide citations." ChatGPT will give you bullet points and citations, offering a framework for your topic and additional sources to explore.

In my experience, the citations provided were for papers and books without links. I had to verify the titles by searching them online. If you want to skip this step, ask ChatGPT to "provide citations with links," and you'll get clickable sources to check yourself.

If you're struggling with specific passages, you can copy and paste them into ChatGPT or even upload a photo. It's like reshuffling the text to help you understand it better.

4. Verify Responses and Citations

Always double-check ChatGPT's responses. In one case, ChatGPT didn't notice that an article was actually an excerpt from a novel, mistakenly identifying it as the novel itself. It reported the novel's publication date incorrectly as December 11, 2024, when the novel was published on October 8, and the excerpt was published on December 11.

ChatGPT can sometimes fabricate sources, so it's crucial to verify them. For a non-linked book title, ChatGPT listed the publication year as 2009, but I could only find editions from 2012 onward. While other details were accurate, this serves as a reminder that ChatGPT can err or lack transparency in sourcing.

FAQ

What are ChatGPT's limitations?

When using ChatGPT to summarize texts, remember it can sometimes hallucinate information. Always verify its outputs. ChatGPT uses a vast amount of data to mimic human responses, which is why it might confidently give incorrect answers. Make sure to fact-check any information you get from ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT summarize a PDF?

Yes, now that ChatGPT supports file uploads in both free and paid versions, you can upload a PDF and ask for a summary. It handled a two-page tech company press release well. For longer documents, you can try ChatPDF for free, which allows you to summarize two PDFs up to 120 pages per day. A subscription is available for $5 per month.

Can ChatGPT summarize an email thread?

Technically, yes, if you copy and paste all emails into ChatGPT. However, for security reasons, I wouldn't recommend this as emails can contain sensitive information. A safer approach would be to review the email thread yourself and use ChatGPT to help draft a response based on the key points you've identified.
