ChatGPT hit by major service failure during GPT-5.6 series launch

According to OpenAI's official status page, ChatGPT is currently experiencing service disruptions, including elevated error rates, login difficulties for some users, and intermittent issues. The OpenAI team is investigating and working to resolve the problem. At the time of writing, the outage has persisted for over 20 minutes.
OpenAI has just launched the three-tiered GPT-5.6 product line.
This outage comes shortly after the official release of the GPT-5.6 series. OpenAI recently introduced three distinct models under a new celestial naming hierarchy: the flagship GPT-5.6 Sol (Sun), designed for complex reasoning, code development, scientific research, and cybersecurity; the balanced GPT-5.6 Terra (Earth), suited for everyday mainstream office tasks, offering performance comparable to GPT-5.5 at half the cost; and the lightweight GPT-5.6 Luna (Moon), optimized for response speed and low cost, ideal for high-frequency batch calling scenarios.
Industry analysts view the three-tier GPT-5.6 lineup as a strong countermove by OpenAI against competitor Anthropic, using differentiated pricing to address various customer segments. Together with the ChatGPT Work intelligent agent product, OpenAI aims to shift the core competition in AI toward its more advantageous consumer market.
ChatGPT has experienced large-scale failures before.
This is not the first time ChatGPT has suffered a major service disruption. In December 2023, a similar outage occurred, with nearly 3,000 reports logged on the monitoring platform Downdetector. As one of the most widely used AI applications globally, any outage impacts a huge number of users who depend on it. Service stability remains a challenge that OpenAI must continuously address as it rapidly iterates.
