ChatGPT Ads Global Expansion on Hold
OpenAI has officially addressed the recent discovery by Reddit users of advertising clauses in its privacy policy and the subsequent global speculation. In a statement to the media, the company clarified that current ad testing is confined to free and select subscription users in the United States, with no immediate plans for a global rollout.
OpenAI emphasized its cautious, phased approach to expansion. The current priority is gathering insights from real user feedback rather than pursuing rapid scaling. Operational data indicates the advertising system operates on a platform entirely separate from the chat model, ensuring brands cannot influence or alter AI responses and preserving the model's integrity.

Regarding user privacy and experience, OpenAI states that ads will only appear below response content to minimize disruption to the conversation flow. Additionally, users under 18 will be automatically shielded from such content. While the ad model has sparked discussions about model neutrality, OpenAI maintains that its primary aim is to explore more personalized service models while upholding privacy standards.
ChatGPT now boasts 900 million weekly active users, with individual paid subscriptions surpassing 50 million. Given this substantial user base, the introduction of advertising is viewed as a significant step in its commercialization strategy. For now, however, the vast majority of users worldwide will continue to experience an ad-free and pure conversational interface.
