BYD Unveils Xuanji A3, Its First Automotive-Grade 4nm AI Chip
The global race for the foundational computing power of intelligent vehicles has reached a pivotal moment. On May 29, BYD unveiled the "Xuanji A3," China’s first fully self-developed, designed, and supply-chain-tested 4nm vehicle-grade intelligent driving chip. This milestone shatters the stereotype that this new energy leader focuses solely on electrification, signaling the arrival of domestic vehicle AI chips among the world’s elite.
Regarding core technical specifications, the Xuanji A3 rivals industry leaders like NVIDIA Thor. Featuring a 16-core CPU with computing power reaching 420K DMIPS, it effortlessly handles complex multi-modal tasks including intelligent driving, smart cockpit management, and body control. With a memory bandwidth of 273GB/s and a proprietary bus architecture enabling nanosecond-level low-latency data scheduling, three combined chips can theoretically exceed 2100 TOPS.

What truly disrupts the industry with the Xuanji A3 is not just raw power, but its strategic focus on energy efficiency and practical application. Unlike the general-purpose GPU architecture used in NVIDIA’s Orin or Thor, BYD has opted for a dedicated NPU (Neural Network Processor) approach. While general-purpose GPUs retain redundant logic for graphics rendering to ensure broad compatibility, the Xuanji A3 hardwires AI operators like matrix multiplication and convolution directly at the hardware level, deeply customized for specific algorithms. This design reduces power consumption per unit of computing by 20% compared to similar products and doubles algorithm resource utilization, delivering twice the effective performance with fewer transistors.
This specialized architecture translates into tangible real-world advantages. During tests in Pingshan, Shenzhen’s old streets, vehicles equipped with the Xuanji A3 demonstrated exceptional perception and decision-making when navigating sudden EV crossings and tight U-turns. Backed by confidence in its core architecture, BYD made an unprecedented commitment at the launch: if an accident occurs due to the driving system’s assistance during urban navigation, the platform will fully cover the resulting economic losses without any limits.
