Well-known tech journalist Mark Gurman reports that the long-anticipated AirPods with built-in cameras have entered the critical final development stage: Design Verification Testing (DVT). This means the product's industrial design and core features are largely finalized, positioning these earbuds as Apple's first true AI wearable device.
Not for Taking Photos: The Camera Serves as Siri's "Eyes"
Despite what many might assume, the low-resolution camera embedded in these AirPods is not meant for everyday photography or video recording. Instead, it gives Siri a visual perception capability. The earbuds resemble upcoming AirPods Pro 3, with a slightly longer stem to accommodate the lens module.
With these "eyes," Siri can capture and understand the user's surroundings in real time. For example, while standing in front of a refrigerator, you could ask, "What dishes can I make with these ingredients?" and Siri would identify the items and offer suggestions. This experience is similar to having OpenAI's visual analysis or the iPhone's "Visual Intelligence" directly in your ear.
New Forms of Smart Navigation and Life Assistance
Beyond interactive Q&A, Apple is exploring deeper applications of visual AI:
Precise Navigation: While walking with navigation, the AI can recognize road signs and alert users exactly when to turn.
Proactive Reminders: The system can send real-time recommendations based on what it sees—such as roadside notices or objects.
Privacy Protection: To address privacy concerns, the earbuds include a micro LED indicator that lights up when visual data is uploaded to the cloud, alerting the wearer.
Four Years in Development, Possibly Launching This September
After four years of development, this product faced repeated delays due to software compatibility issues. Recent progress suggests that thanks to the collaboration with Google's Gemini, the upgraded Siri could launch as early as September this year. If Apple is satisfied with the visual recognition quality, these earbuds may debut alongside the new system.
Notably, this is a key part of Apple's leadership transition. John Ternus, who is set to become CEO, has high expectations for this product line, believing it could revolutionize the industry much like the iPhone did. In addition to these AirPods, Apple is also developing AI smart glasses and neck-mounted recording devices, aiming to build a comprehensive AI hardware ecosystem.
