Apple Could Delay Next iPhone Launch for Foldable Model Release

According to The Information, Apple is preparing a significant reshuffle of its iPhone release calendar for 2026, introducing the company's first foldable iPhone alongside newly scheduled "Air" models. This strategic shift reportedly moves the standard iPhone 18 launch from its traditional fall window to spring 2027, where it will debut concurrently with an updated iPhone 16E variant.
The reorganization aims to streamline what would otherwise become an unwieldy six-model iPhone portfolio, particularly with the anticipated addition of both a new slimmer design and revolutionary foldable device. The Information reveals Apple has opted for a book-style folding mechanism rather than a clamshell design, featuring a compact 5.7-inch external display that expands to a near-8-inch tablet-like screen when unfolded. Renowned supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborates these details, noting the device will maintain an ultra-slim 4.5–4.8mm profile when open and will rely exclusively on Face ID technology.

The report also discloses several notable technical developments, including a new battery case solution for the iPhone 17 Air. Internal testing reportedly indicated the ultra-thin handset's standalone battery performance wouldn't meet Apple's typical iPhone battery benchmarks. Additionally, The Information confirms long-speculated under-display Face ID technology will debut on iPhone 18 Pro models, reducing the front display to a single discreet camera cutout in the upper left corner.
