Anthropic's Cowork Tool Enables Claude Code Access for Non-Programmers

On Monday, Anthropic unveiled Cowork, a new tool designed as a more user-friendly iteration of Claude Code. Integrated directly into the Claude Desktop app, Cowork allows users to select a specific folder, granting Claude permission to read and edit files within it. Further guidance is provided through the standard chat interface. This creates an experience similar to a sandboxed version of Claude Code but with a significantly simpler setup process that demands far less technical expertise.

Currently in a research preview phase, Cowork is exclusively available to Max subscribers. Users on other plans can join a waitlist for future access.

The development of Cowork was partly motivated by a growing trend of subscribers using Claude Code for tasks beyond programming, treating it as a versatile, agentic AI assistant. Built on the Claude Agent SDK, Cowork leverages the same core model as Claude Code. The designated folder system provides a straightforward way to control which files Cowork can access. Since the app operates without command-line tools or virtual environments, it feels much more approachable for non-technical users.

This accessibility unlocks a wide range of potential applications. Anthropic offers the example of compiling an expense report from a folder containing photos of receipts. However, Claude Code users have already adapted the system for managing media libraries, scanning social media content, and analyzing conversation transcripts.

Like Claude Code, Cowork is engineered to execute a series of actions autonomously, without requiring constant user input. This approach can be risky if the tool receives vague or conflicting instructions. In a blog post announcing Cowork, Anthropic explicitly cautions users about risks such as prompt injection attacks or accidental file deletion, strongly advising that all instructions be formulated as clearly and unambiguously as possible.

"These risks aren't unique to Cowork," the post states, "but this might be your first time using a more advanced tool that goes beyond simple conversation."

Launched as a command-line tool in November 2024, Claude Code has emerged as one of Anthropic's most successful products. This success has spurred the company to release a series of new interfaces in recent months, including a web interface in October and a Slack integration just two months later.
