Anthropic Tightens Access to Claude Opus, Ending Free Tier

Anthropic has announced a significant policy shift regarding its most advanced AI model, Claude Fable5. Starting July 7, 2026, the company will discontinue access to this model for all existing subscription tiers.
This change effectively removes core capabilities previously bundled with membership plans. For developers and power users accustomed to unlimited access via monthly or annual subscriptions, this transition is expected to result in substantially higher usage costs.
End of Export Bans and Global Availability
Earlier, the U.S. Department of Commerce lifted export restrictions on two high-end AI models, Fable and Mythos. This regulatory easing initially allowed Anthropic to roll out Fable5 globally across major platforms.
However, facing unexpectedly high and volatile global demand, Anthropic halted the rollout to preserve server stability. The company has now shifted to a usage-based billing structure to manage load and ensure service reliability.
Community Backlash and Official Clarification
The policy update sparked significant controversy, with many subscribers viewing the change as a hidden price hike. In response, an Anthropic engineer addressed community concerns on social media to clarify the situation.
The company clarified that while Fable5 will be removed from Pro, Max, and Team subscriptions after July 7, they aim to reintegrate it into these plans as soon as server capacity permits.
