OpenAI Lures Wall Street Bankers With Huge Pay, Equity to Reshape Finance

OpenAI is intensifying its push into investment banking, with recent job listings revealing a search for investment professionals possessing over two years of experience to join its San Francisco applied AI team as a "subject matter expert." The role offers a base salary ranging from $185,000 to $205,000 annually (roughly 1.394 million RMB), complemented by equity incentives—a significant perk given OpenAI’s preparations for a private IPO.
The objective isn’t to hire bankers to use AI, but to “teach” AI how to comprehend the intricacies of investment banking.
OpenAI’s job description mandates that candidates possess a deep, up-to-date understanding of real-world investment banking operations, including company and industry research, financial analysis and modeling, valuation, due diligence, transaction execution, and client material preparation. Crucially, candidates must grasp the workflows and decision-making logic across all hierarchy levels—from junior analysts to directors—and accurately identify which processes can be fully automated, which benefit from AI-assisted decision-making, and which require human oversight.
This role defines a unique position: rather than hiring bankers to simply “use” AI, OpenAI seeks to “teach” the technology to understand investment banking. The hire will collaborate closely with product teams to pinpoint high-value AI applications in the sector, build business process prototypes using OpenAI’s proprietary tools, and validate whether initial outputs meet the standards of industry practitioners. Essentially, OpenAI aims to set the “quality benchmark” for AI in investment banking.
Major tech firms are vying for Wall Street, driving up competition in the enterprise AI market.
OpenAI’s recent hiring drive highlights the fierce battle among AI companies for the lucrative enterprise financial sector. Earlier this year, Anthropic launched ten new intelligent agent tools designed to streamline repetitive Wall Street tasks, positioning financial services as the second-largest revenue-generating enterprise sector, trailing only technology.
Competitors are already making strides. Anthropic has granted access to the Claude Mythos preview under its “Glass Wing Project” to a select group of institutions, with JPMorgan as an early partner; the initiative has since expanded to 15 countries and over 150 companies. OpenAI is keeping pace, with Goldman Sachs investing in its deployment subsidiary and becoming a co-developer of OpenAI’s “Trusted Network Access Program” in April.
