Anthropic Releases Upgraded 'Haiku' AI Model in Compact Form

On Wednesday, Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 4.5, the latest iteration of its most compact model. According to a company blog post, it delivers performance comparable to Sonnet 4, but at one-third the cost and over twice the speed. While the
Anthropic cites a series of new benchmark results to support these performance claims. In their internal testing, Haiku achieved 73% on SWE-Bench Verified and 41% on the command-line-focused Terminal-Bench. These scores place it below Sonnet 4.5, but on par with Sonnet 4, GPT-5, and Gemini 2.5 in each respective category. Comparable performance is also demonstrated on benchmarks for tool use, computer use, and visual reasoning.
This new Haiku version is available immediately across all of Anthropic's free plans. The company believes it will be especially attractive for free-tier AI products, as it can deliver substantial capabilities while keeping server loads low. The model's lightweight design also makes it easier to deploy multiple Haiku agents in parallel or in tandem with a more advanced model.
In a press statement, Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger noted that Haiku enables new deployment styles in production for the first time. "It's opening up entirely new categories of what's possible with AI in production environments," Krieger said. "Imagine Sonnet handling complex planning while sub-agents powered by Haiku execute tasks at speed. We're providing a complete agent toolbox where each model offers the ideal blend of intelligence, speed, and cost for different parts of a job."
The most immediate applications are expected in software development tools, where Claude Code is already widely used and low latency is often critical. In statements provided by Anthropic, Zencoder CEO Andrew Filev described the new Haiku as "unlocking an entirely new set of use cases."
Haiku 4.5 follows a series of major releases from Anthropic, arriving just two weeks after Sonnet 4.5 and two months after Opus 4.1—both hailed as state-of-the-art upon launch. The previous Haiku version was released in October 2024.
