Robot Startup Generalist Closes New Funding Round, Valued at $3 Billion

Robotics startup Generalist has achieved a $3 billion valuation after closing a $200 million funding round led by 8VC. According to regulatory filings and industry sources, this latest investment extends the company’s $400 million Series B round, originally led by Radical Ventures in June, which had valued Generalist at $2 billion. The total Series B funding now stands at $600 million.
Founded in 2024 by Pete Florence, Andy Zeng, and Andrew Barry—former Google DeepMind researchers and a former Boston Dynamics engineer—Generalist has attracted backing from 8VC, Radical Ventures, NVIDIA, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li.
Generalist specializes in building AI foundational models capable of operating across diverse robotic platforms. Its latest 1.5 generation model enables robots to rapidly acquire new skills by observing short video demonstrations lasting just 3 to 12 seconds. The company is currently collaborating with select clients, refining its models based on real-world feedback to optimize performance for specific use cases.
The robotics sector is witnessing a surge in general-purpose model development. Alongside Generalist, competitors such as Physical Intelligence (valued at $11 billion), Skild AI (valued at $14 billion), and Genesis AI (valued at $3 billion) are vying for market share. While this influx of capital signals strong investor confidence in a potential “ChatGPT moment” for robotics, widespread commercialization remains distant. The industry still faces significant hurdles, particularly the inability of robots to leverage the vast datasets available on the open web for training.
