In response to the earlier source code leak, AI giant Anthropic has initiated a legal counterattack. The company recently submitted multiple DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown notices to GitHub, requesting removal of all repositories illegally hosting its Claude Code source code.
GitHub responded with a sweeping "all-in-one" approach, deleting not only the reported main repository but also over 8,100 related forks in one go. This marks the most extensive code copyright cleanup in the AI industry in recent years.
Leak Cause Reversed: Tool Bug, Not Human Error
Earlier, many assumed the leak stemmed from an employee's operational error. However, the latest investigation reveals the real culprit may be a bug in one of Anthropic's internal packaging tools.
The bug caused the system to mistakenly include sensitive files and the entire TypeScript source code—intended to remain private—when building production packages. While this technical revelation somewhat alleviated concerns about employee competence, it also exposed significant security flaws in Anthropic's automated workflows.
Despite GitHub's cooperation in removing the 8,100 repositories, the source code had already been downloaded, cloned, and distributed across Telegram, cloud storage, and private Git platforms by tens of thousands of developers worldwide within 48 hours. As a result, completely erasing this data is nearly impossible.
