AI Platforms Restrict Services During Gaokao: Doubao Disables Photo Queries, Tencent Yuanbao Keeps No-Answer Policy
Several major Chinese AI platforms have recently pushed back against online rumors that AI tools would be disabled during the Gaokao, stating that certain features will be restricted to maintain exam fairness.
Douyin's Duanbao customer service confirmed the tool remains usable during Gaokao, but functions like photo-based question answering will be turned off. A Tencent insider revealed that its AI assistant Yuanbao already adopted a policy of not answering questions last year, with historical data showing it restricted image recognition and summary instructions on June 9 through a unified response.

While representatives from Baidu's Wenyi Yiyuan and iFLYTEK said they haven't received specific restriction notices, iFLYTEK technical staff noted that industry consensus expects large models to implement restrictions during Gaokao. Currently, core AI tools like Kimi, DeepSeek, and Duanbao have already completed compliance settings for the exam period.
This move reflects the generative AI industry's collective shift toward self-regulation ahead of major social exams. As multimodal image recognition and strong reasoning models gain traction among students, the boundary between learning assistance and exam assistance has become a key focus for regulation and technical safeguards. Large model platforms disabling or limiting question-answering functions during Gaokao is not only a compliance measure to prevent cheating but also signals that AI applications are rapidly entering a phase of precise, scenario-based governance.
