AI music generator ProducerAI joins Google Labs

On Tuesday, Google announced that ProducerAI, its generative AI music tool, is being integrated into Google Labs.

Backed by The Chainsmokers, ProducerAI enables users to generate music through natural language prompts, such as “make a lofi beat.” The platform leverages Google DeepMind’s Lyria 3 music-generation model, which can convert both text and image inputs into audio outputs.

Last week, Google revealed that Lyria 3 would be integrated into its flagship Gemini app. However, ProducerAI allows users to interact with the AI model in a more collaborative manner, as Elias Roman, Google Labs’ Senior Director of Product Management, described.

“ProducerAI has opened up new creative possibilities for me,” Roman wrote in a blog post. “I’ve blended genres in fresh ways, created personalized birthday songs for family, and crafted custom workout playlists for myself and friends.”

Google also noted that three-time Grammy-winning rapper Wyclef Jean employed the Lyria 3 model and Google’s Music AI Sandbox for his latest track, “Back From Abu Dhabi.”

“This isn’t just a machine you click a hundred times and then you’re finished. It’s a deliberate curation process where you sift through and say, ‘I think that might work,’” said Jeff Chang, Director of Product Management at Google DeepMind, in a company video.

Jean remembers wanting to hear how a flute would sound in an already recorded track, and using Google’s tools to seamlessly add a flute part to the mix.

“What I want everyone to realize […] is that we live in an era where humans must be the most creative,” Jean said in the video. “You have one advantage over AI: a soul. And AI has one advantage over you: infinite information.”

AI’s Impact on the Music Industry

Some musicians strongly oppose the use of AI in music creation, largely because generative AI tools are often trained on copyrighted artist data without permission. In 2024, hundreds of musicians — including Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, and Jon Bon Jovi — signed an open letter urging tech companies not to diminish human creativity with AI music generation tools.

A group of music publishers recently filed a $3 billion lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, alleging it illegally downloaded over 20,000 copyrighted songs, including sheet music, lyrics, and compositions. (Anthropic had already been ordered by a court to offer a $1.5 billion settlement to authors whose books were used without permission for AI training.)

However, other artists have embraced the technology’s potential to enhance audio quality rather than as a creative tool.

Paul McCartney employed AI-powered noise reduction technology — similar to the features that let Zoom or FaceTime filter out background noise — to restore a decades-old, low-quality demo by John Lennon. The resulting “new” Beatles song, “Now and Then,” won a Grammy in 2025.

Meanwhile, AI music generation platforms like Suno have produced synthetic tracks convincing enough to top Spotify and Billboard charts. Telisha Jones, a 31-year-old from Mississippi, used Suno to transform her (ostensibly organic) poetry into the viral R&B hit “How Was I Supposed To Know,” securing a record deal with Hallwood Media reportedly worth $3 million.

The legal status of using copyrighted works as training data remains ambiguous. Last year, federal judge William Alsup ruled that training on copyrighted material is legal, but pirating it is not.
