a16z Unveils Leading 100 AI Consumer Apps with ChatGPT Topping the List
Silicon Valley’s prominent venture capital firm a16z recently published its “Top 100 Consumer Generative AI Apps in March 2026” report, revealing unprecedented growth and diversification in the global AI market. In this competitive landscape, ChatGPT continues to maintain an undisputed leadership position, with web traffic and mobile active user counts more than double those of Gemini. Over the past year, ChatGPT’s weekly active users surged by 500 million, and today more than 10% of the world’s population uses the tool each week—making it a true global infrastructure phenomenon.

Even with ChatGPT far in the lead, market competition remains intense. Over the past year, Gemini and Claude experienced significant acceleration in paid user growth, with growth rates hitting 258% and 200%, respectively. At the same time, multi-tenant usage has become more common, with roughly 20% of loyal ChatGPT users also turning to Gemini for certain tasks. This shift in the competitive landscape reflects how users are pursuing general intelligence while tailoring tool choices to the unique strengths of different models.

Notably, the AI market is splitting into three distinct geographic ecosystems, with DeepSeek emerging as the only product capable of bridging regional divides. In markets like China and Russia—where mainstream Western tools have struggled to gain traction—DeepSeek has demonstrated strong influence. Data shows that more than 30% of DeepSeek’s traffic originates from China, while Russia has become its second-largest saturated market worldwide. This unique cross-regional reach has opened new growth pathways outside the Western AI strongholds led by the United States, India, and the UK.

The rise of the Russian market has become another key highlight of this ranking. In addition to DeepSeek’s popularity, local tech giant Yandex—with its browser featuring the integrated Alice AI assistant—has broken into the global top ten mobile AI products, reaching 71 million monthly active users. This signals that, in the generative AI era’s next phase, building ecosystems attuned to regional and cultural differences is becoming as crucial as competing on compute and algorithms in shaping the global AI landscape.
