7 Reasons Kindles Remain a Great Purchase, Even Without Downloads

Ever since Amazon announced (and now implemented) the discontinuation of Kindle file downloads to computers, I've been diving deep into the Kindle ecosystem. From sharing tips on sideloading ebooks onto your Kindle, converting formats for Kindle compatibility, finding free ebooks, to snagging deals on upgrading older Kindles, I've covered it all. But one question keeps popping up from my readers: Is it still a good idea to buy a Kindle?
Some staunchly oppose the idea, arguing that Amazon's control over its ecosystem means you're at the mercy of their ever-changing policies, potentially losing control over your book collection. On the other hand, there are those who are simply curious about whether the Kindle experience is still worth it, especially with the new file restrictions in mind. After all, alternatives like Kobo and Boox are out there.
My wife and I have been Kindle users since 2008, and we also own a Kobo Libra Colour, which we enjoy for its ability to handle non-Kindle ebooks. It's a solid reading experience, but it's not a Kindle. Let's explore why you might still want to consider buying one.
Entry Price and Build Quality
I've never been much of a Kindle device enthusiast myself, preferring to read on my iPhone. But when the window to download my entire library was about to close, I picked up a base-model Kindle for just over a hundred bucks. To my surprise, it's a really solid device – lightweight and fast. It's so good that I've decided to keep it. We still have working Kindles from as far back as 2009, some of which can no longer access the Kindle ecosystem but still hold a charge and boot up. These devices are built to last.
Generous Returns Policy
Amazon's returns policy is pretty generous. Initially, I planned to buy the Kindle, download my books, and return it. But I ended up liking it so much that I kept it. If you're a Prime member, you get free shipping and a 30-day return window, no restocking fee. This low-risk purchase option is a big reason why Amazon retains its customers' loyalty.
Expanded Battery Life
I bought the base-model Kindle 16 days ago and have been using it daily. It's still showing 78% battery life! Kindles are renowned for their long-lasting battery, so you won't need to charge them often. They just keep going and going.
Device Freedom and Cloud Syncing
One of the initial draws for me into the Kindle ecosystem was Amazon's relatively open device policy. Yes, there's DRM and you're locked into the Kindle format, but you can access Kindle Reader on most mobile devices and desktop operating systems, including Linux via the Web reader. Plus, you can read the same ebook on multiple devices simultaneously, with Amazon's ecosystem keeping everything in sync. This feature has allowed me to enjoy Kindle books across various platforms without needing a dedicated Kindle device.
Audible Integration
Back in the day, audiobooks were a niche market. My grandfather, who couldn't hold books due to illness, relied on records from a special lending library. Over time, audiobooks evolved from cassettes to digital formats. When Audible entered the scene and was eventually acquired by Amazon in 2008, it revolutionized the audiobook market. Many Kindle books sync with Audible, allowing my wife to switch seamlessly between listening and reading on her Kindle.
Accessibility Options
The accessibility features on modern Kindles would have amazed my grandfather. From font scaling to VoiceView screen reading that pairs with a Bluetooth device, and even the Open Dyslexic font, Kindles cater to a wide range of reading needs.
Waterproof-ish Kindle Devices
Devices like the Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation and above), Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle Oasis (9th Generation and above) are considered waterproof by Amazon. They're perfect for beach or bath reading, but you'll want to dry them immediately if they get wet. Still, they offer peace of mind for those accidental splashes.
The Kindle Ecosystem
The Kindle ecosystem boasts an enormous collection of ebooks, including current bestsellers, and supports family sharing. While we can't download Kindle files for backup anymore, we can share them within the family. Kindle Unlimited also lets you "check out" up to 20 books at a time, which can be a cost-effective option for avid readers. While some books don't allow family sharing and not all are available on Kindle Unlimited, these features still provide significant value and access to a vast library.
