WhatsApp Launches Dedicated iPad App After 15 Years

Meta has introduced a native iPad app for WhatsApp, over 15 years since the messaging platform and the first iPad debuted in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Now available on the App Store, WhatsApp for iPad mirrors iPhone features, supporting audio and video calls with up to 32 participants, utilizing both device cameras, and enabling screen sharing during calls.
The iPad app integrates with iPadOS tools like Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over, allowing seamless multitasking alongside other apps. Users can view messages in split-screen mode while browsing or watching videos, leveraging the larger display for enhanced productivity compared to smaller mobile devices.
Previously, accessing WhatsApp on a larger iPad screen required using the web version in a browser or desktop apps for Mac or PC. In 2022, WhatsApp head Will Cathcart expressed Meta’s interest in creating a native iPadOS experience, acknowledging long-standing user demand for an iPad app.
The WhatsApp account on X hinted at the app’s arrival with a subtle eyes emoji on Monday, though its swift release was unexpected. Meta is also reportedly working on an iPad-optimized Instagram app, but no similar teasers have surfaced for that project.
