xAI Legal Chief Resigns Following Turbulent Year at Musk's Startup

Robert Keele Steps Down as xAI's Legal Chief After Yearlong Tenure
xAI's former head of legal Robert Keele announced his departure this week following just over a year at Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup. The executive cited family priorities as his primary reason for leaving, noting disagreements with Musk's approach.
"My two toddlers need me present more than I've been able to be," Keele shared across both X and LinkedIn platforms. While describing his xAI experience as "extraordinary" and working alongside Musk as "the professional opportunity of a lifetime," Keele acknowledged struggling to balance "family commitments with the company's intense demands."
The announcement drew widespread support from both xAI colleagues and working parents across social media. Keele originally joined the startup in May 2024 as its inaugural legal chief, abruptly closing his freshly-launched fractional legal practice Keele Law after just three weeks to accept the position.
Leadership Transition During Rapid Growth Phase
Keele's arrival preceded xAI's landmark $6 billion Series B funding round that same month, backed by prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. The financing valued the company at $24 billion.
xAI subsequently underwent dramatic expansion, culminating in its March acquisition of Musk's social media platform X in a deal that reportedly valued the AI firm at $80 billion and the social network at $33 billion.
Background and Successor
Prior to founding Keele Law, the attorney served as legal chief at autonomous aircraft developer Elroy Air and held the general counsel position at Airbus' Silicon Valley innovation hub.
xAI appointed Lily Lim as Keele's replacement. With an unconventional career arc, Lim initially worked as a NASA aerospace engineer developing navigation systems for Venus surface mapping before transitioning to law. She joined xAI in late 2024 focusing on privacy and intellectual property matters following legal roles at ServiceNow and other technology firms.
Pattern Across Musk-Led Companies
Keele's exit reflects ongoing executive turnover throughout Musk's business ventures. Recent months have seen the departure of X CEO Linda Yaccarino and multiple Tesla executives.
The billionaire entrepreneur maintains a reputation for demanding extreme work commitments from employees, including overnight office stays during critical periods like X's acquisition. Several emerging startups appear to be adopting similar intensive work cultures, exemplified by AI coding firm Cognition whose CEO recently dismissed work-life balance as unimportant in an employee memo.
