HomexAI Unveils Image Generation API
Elon Musk's AI outfit, xAI, has spiced things up by adding image generation to its API. Right now, they've got just one model on the roster, dubbed "grok-2-image-1212." Feed it a caption, and it'll whip up to 10 images for you in JPG format, with a cap of five requests per second. Each image will set you back $0.07.
To put that in perspective, xAI's partner from last year, Black Forest Labs, which helped roll out image generation on Musk's social platform X, charges a bit less at around $0.05 per image. Meanwhile, another big name in the game, Ideogram, goes a tad higher at $0.08 per image.
According to xAI's docs, don't expect to tweak the quality, size, or style of your images just yet. Plus, they've got a "chat model" that might tweak your prompts before the image magic happens.
xAI kicked off its API back in October 2024, and it looks like they're on a mission to drum up some serious cash. They're beefing up their flagship models like Grok 3 and are apparently chatting with investors about a hefty $10 billion funding round that could push their valuation up to $75 billion.
And they're not stopping there. xAI's recently snapped up a generative AI video startup and is busy expanding their data center in Memphis, where they train and run their various models. Seems like they've got big plans in the works!
