xAI Loses Half Its Founding Team

On Monday night, xAI co-founder Yuhuai (Tony) Wu announced his departure from the company. "It’s time to begin my next chapter," Wu stated in a late-night post on X. "We are in an era of immense possibility: a small team empowered by AI can achieve the impossible and redefine what's possible."
Less than 24 hours later, on Tuesday afternoon, another xAI co-founder reporting directly to Elon Musk, Jimmy Ba, also announced his exit. He shared a gracious note on X, writing in part, "My immense thanks to @elonmusk for uniting us on this remarkable journey. I am incredibly proud of the xAI team's accomplishments and will continue to support them as a friend."
Individually, these announcements follow a standard tech industry template. However, they contribute to a concerning trend for the AI lab. Six of the company's 12 founding team members have now departed, with five of those exits occurring within the last year alone. Infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic left for OpenAI in mid-2024, followed by Google veteran Christian Szegedy in February 2025. This past August, Igor Babuschkin departed to launch a venture firm, and former Microsoft employee Greg Yang cited health reasons for his exit just last month.
By all reports, these separations have been amicable. There are numerous reasons why founders might choose to move on nearly three years into the venture. Elon Musk is famously a demanding leader. Furthermore, with SpaceX's acquisition of xAI finalized and an IPO anticipated in the coming months, those involved stand to gain a significant financial return. Given the favorable climate for AI startup fundraising, it is natural for senior researchers to consider launching their own ventures.
However, less harmonious factors may also be at play. The company's flagship product, the Grok chatbot, has been plagued by erratic behavior and signs of internal interference—issues that could easily create tension within the technical team. Additionally, recent modifications to xAI's image-generation tools led to a flood of deepfake pornography on the platform, triggering protracted but serious legal repercussions.
Regardless of the specific causes, the cumulative effect is cause for alarm. xAI faces substantial unfinished work, and its impending IPO will subject the lab to unprecedented scrutiny. With Musk already advancing plans for orbital data centers, the pressure to deliver on these ambitious projects will be immense. The relentless pace of AI model development continues, and if Grok fails to keep up with the latest offerings from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, the public offering could be jeopardized.
In short, the stakes could not be higher. xAI must retain all the top AI talent it can.
