WordPress Unveils 'Telex,' Its Experimental AI Development Tool
WordPress, the popular web publishing platform, has unveiled an early-stage AI development tool. CEO Matt Mullenweg described it as a “V0 or Lovable equivalent, but tailored specifically for WordPress” — referencing well-known “vibe coding” platforms that let users build software through AI-powered prompts. Named Telex, the new tool was introduced by Mullenweg during his keynote at WordCamp US 2025 in Portland, alongside several other AI experiments.
In his presentation, Mullenweg gave a brief demonstration of Telex, showing how it helps users generate Gutenberg blocks — the modular components like text, images, and columns that form a WordPress site. He highlighted how one developer used the tool to quickly create a simple marketing animation.
Currently available on its own domain at telex.automattic.ai, Telex is marked as “experimental.” Users input a prompt describing the content block they want, and the tool generates a downloadable .zip file. This file can then be installed as a plugin on any WordPress site or in WordPress Playground — the latter being a browser-based environment that runs WordPress without a hosting setup.

Early testers have noted that Telex is still in development — several test projects didn’t run smoothly or required extra tweaking to function as intended.
Although Mullenweg acknowledged that Telex remains a prototype, he expressed strong confidence in AI's ability to advance the WordPress mission over time.
“At the heart of democratized publishing — which is central to WordPress’s mission — is taking complex tasks that once required coding skills and making them accessible to everyone. We make it available in a completely open way, across all languages, at minimal cost, and as open source — so you truly own and control your work,” Mullenweg said.

“At its core, there’s a spark of something truly empowering,” he said of AI. “This is an incredibly exciting time to be building with WordPress.”

He also mentioned his preferred AI browser, Perplexity’s Comet, which enables users to interact with WordPress through its interface.
As for the legal challenges the company has faced over the past year or so, Mullenweg provided only a brief update. WordPress is currently in a dispute with hosting provider WP Engine, which Mullenweg claims profits from WordPress’s work without contributing adequately in return. He is pushing for WP Engine to license the WordPress trademark, arguing that the current situation confuses customers about the company’s relationship with the platform.
“The quick update is that the case is moving through the legal system. We trust in the courts to be fair,” Mullenweg stated. “If there’s any further comment, I’ll just note that there was a settlement conference — I attended; the other CEO didn’t. It’s progressing through the process, and that’s all I’ll say on the matter.”
