White House Calls on AI Firms to Commit to Price Transparency Amid Industry Pledges.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers connecting to the national power grid has contributed to rising electricity costs for consumers, pushing the average national electricity price up by over 6% in the past year.
This trend presents a political challenge for incumbents ahead of the fall elections, a issue President Donald Trump addressed in last night's State of the Union speech.
“We are directing major technology companies to take responsibility for their own power requirements,” Trump stated. “They can construct their own power generation facilities as part of their operations, ensuring no one else's bills increase.”
The major cloud providers in question don't need a mandate. They have already publicly committed in recent weeks to mitigating electricity costs by building their own power sources, agreeing to pay premium rates, or both. This is part of a broader strategy to address public relations concerns around data center expansion and gain support from wary local communities.
On January 11, Microsoft announced a policy “to ensure the electricity costs for operating our datacenters are not passed on to residential customers.” On January 26, OpenAI committed to “covering our own energy expenses, so our operations do not raise your energy bills.” On February 11, Anthropic made a similar pledge to “cover any electricity price increases consumers face due to our data centers.” Yesterday, Google unveiled the world's largest battery storage project to support a data center in Minnesota.
The practical implementation of these commitments, and how responsibility for specific price increases will be assigned to individual data centers, remains unclear. The White House has not released the text of the proposed agreement.
“A vague handshake deal with Big Tech over data center costs is insufficient,” Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly posted on social media. “Americans need a concrete guarantee that energy prices won't skyrocket, and communities deserve a voice in the process.”

Boston, MA|June 9, 2026REGISTER NOWWhite House spokesperson Taylor Rodgers said company representatives are scheduled to formally sign the pledge at the White House next week. Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Oracle, and OpenAI are reportedly among the expected attendees, though none of the companies have officially confirmed their participation.
Even if tech companies commit to absorbing electricity costs, on-site power plants are not a perfect solution. They can still negatively impact the local environment and will strain supply chains for natural gas, turbines, solar panels, and batteries, depending on the chosen power source for their computing infrastructure.
