WeChat, Tencent's widely-used social app, has quietly rolled out a limited gray-scale test for its native AI assistant, "Xiao Wei". Users with internal testing access noticed a dedicated "Xiao Wei" icon in the upper-left corner of the main interface. Tapping it opens an AI chat window that looks and feels like a standard conversation.
Per Tencent customer service, this feature is a small-scale test of a native AI service by the WeChat team. It enables users to directly control WeChat's core functions and launch mini programs via text or voice commands. The use cases range from sending messages to friends and browsing Moments to booking services.
As the first genuine native AI assistant inside WeChat, the gray-scale rollout of "Xiao Wei" represents a significant milestone for Tencent in advancing AI large models toward widespread adoption. Unlike earlier AI tools that were accessed via official accounts or third-party mini programs, "Xiao Wei" enjoys higher system-level privileges and deeper ecosystem integration, enabling it to directly parse and carry out complex user commands. This move will further transform WeChat from a "real-time communication and lifestyle service platform" into an "intelligent assistant gateway".
