Washington Post Partners with OpenAI to Enhance News Access via ChatGPT

The Washington Post and OpenAI have unveiled a “strategic partnership” to “expand access to trusted news through ChatGPT,” according to a Washington Post press release.
OpenAI has forged alliances with over 20 other news outlets, including News Corp, Business Insider parent company The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, the Financial Times, Future, and Hearst. The Verge’s parent company, Vox Media, also collaborates with OpenAI.
Under the Washington Post agreement, ChatGPT will provide summaries, quotes, and links to original Washington Post articles in response to relevant queries,” per the press release. The Washington Post notes that “ChatGPT will showcase our journalism across politics, global affairs, business, technology, and beyond, with clear attribution and direct links to full articles, enabling deeper exploration of topics.”
“Making our authoritative reporting readily available to ChatGPT users aligns with our mission to deliver news where and when our audience needs it,” said Peter Elkins-Williams, The Washington Post’s head of global partnerships, in the press release.
Varun Shetty, OpenAI’s head of media partnerships, stated in the release that “over 500 million people turn to ChatGPT weekly for answers to a wide range of questions.” The platform reached 400 million weekly active users in February.
