Based on the most recent updates, several key U.S. federal agencies, such as the Department of the Treasury, the Department of State, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency, have formally begun the complete phase-out of AI products developed by Anthropic.
Amid this technological shift, OpenAI has emerged as the primary beneficiary. The State Department confirmed in an internal memorandum that its proprietary chatbot system, "StateChat," will transition its core model from Anthropic's technology to OpenAI's GPT-4.1. Officials stated this change aims to ensure government tools benefit from cutting-edge technical support, with further migration specifics to be disclosed at a later date.
This widespread transition was not unforeseen. It follows explicit directives from senior U.S. officials for government bodies to reevaluate their engagements with Anthropic. The Pentagon's decision to include the company on its supply chain risk list catalyzed a broader response. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and FHFA Director Sandra Thompson publicly affirmed via social media that their departments and associated entities, including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, will discontinue all use of Anthropic products, including the Claude assistant.
