T-Mobile Debuts Low-Latency Technology in 5G Network

In the coming weeks, T-Mobile is broadening support for the L4S standard, which stands for “Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput.” This technology helps prioritize internet traffic to minimize delays, delivering smoother video calls and cloud gaming by cutting down on frustrating interruptions.
No special phone or plan is needed to experience L4S’s advantages. “The improvement comes from the network side,” says T-Mobile CTO John Saw in an interview with The Verge.
L4S has already been implemented across “many cities” on T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced network, with the carrier “actively expanding” its availability, according to company spokesperson Anushka Bishen. Saw notes T-Mobile is the first US wireless provider to deploy L4S.
The L4S protocol helps devices handle network congestion more efficiently, reducing the chance of buffering and lag—issues that can still occur even with faster 5G connections. Using L4S, data packets are marked when congestion is detected, allowing devices to adapt and ease the bottleneck, possibly resolving it entirely.

Saw illustrated the concept with a driving comparison: “Reactive braking was the old method when traffic slowed down. For consumers, this means apps that support L4S should run with lower latency. As Saw highlights in a recent blog post, technologies like Nvidia's GeForce Now and Apple's FaceTime gain performance improvements from L4S. Both Nvidia and Apple collaborated with Comcast during its L4S trials, and Comcast began rolling out the standard to select cities earlier this year.

Als jemand, der oft Videokonferenzen führt, finde ich die L4S-Technologie echt vielversprechend. Weniger Verzögerung bei Videoanrufen wäre ein echter Game-Changer für die Remote-Arbeit. Hoffentlich setzen sich solche Standards auch bei anderen Anbietern durch, sonst bleibt das nur ein Nischenfeature. Die Frage ist, ob die Netzabdeckung da mithält... 🤔
