Spotify Unveils Voice Command Control for Its AI DJ Feature
Spotify is shaking things up for its Premium users by introducing voice command control to its AI DJ feature. As of today, subscribers can finally take charge of what kind of tunes the AI spits out during their listening sessions. No longer will you be at the mercy of playlists curated purely based on your past listening habits—you can now guide the AI DJ with English voice commands to suit your mood, activity, or preferences.
To activate this new functionality, simply press and hold the 'DJ' button in the bottom-right corner while using the AI DJ feature. You'll hear a beep, signaling that the AI is ready to listen. Then, just speak your desires—for instance, “Play me some electronic beats for a midday run” or “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
Before this update, pressing the DJ button merely shuffled the current track without offering any personalization options. But now, Spotify gives you the power to direct the AI DJ toward specific artists, genres, or even vibes. It’s almost like having a DJ at your beck and call—but instead of relying on a human's taste, you’re tapping into Spotify’s vast AI-powered recommendation engine. In fact, the AI DJ borrows some of the quirky, vibe-based recommendations from the AI Playlist feature that debuted in beta last year. This feature lets you craft a playlist based on text prompts, like asking for “music to soundtrack my life as a movie.”

It’s worth noting that, for now, voice commands are the sole method to influence what the AI DJ plays. While this adds a layer of convenience in certain settings, it could feel limiting if you're in a situation where talking isn’t practical. Still, it’s a bold move by Spotify to bring more control into the hands of its users—and one that could set a precedent for future AI-driven features in streaming platforms.
- Tip: If you have a specific track in mind, it might be easier to play it directly rather than hoping the AI DJ aligns it properly.
