Snowflake Set to Acquire Database Startup Crunchy Data

The trend of tech companies acquiring data firms continued this Monday with Snowflake's announcement to purchase Crunchy Data.
Cloud data platform Snowflake revealed its plan to acquire Crunchy Data, a key PostgreSQL database partner, late this afternoon. An informed source estimated the transaction to be valued at approximately $250 million.
Specific financial terms remain undisclosed. Snowflake has refrained from commenting on the deal's valuation.
This acquisition marks the latest in a series of strategic moves by technology giants to enhance their core database capabilities that support AI systems. Last week, Salesforce completed its acquisition of long-established Informatica to strengthen its data management infrastructure for AI applications. Several weeks prior, Alation purchased Numbers Station, enabling its clients to deploy AI systems leveraging structured data. Earlier this month, ServiceNow acquired Data.World with similar AI-driven objectives.
Crunchy Data specializes in providing organizations with essential tools for PostgreSQL development—an open-source, object-relational database management system favored by developers for its seamless integration with SQL. The 13-year-old company serves notable clients including UPS, SAS, and Moneytree, alongside public sector entities such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
This strategic acquisition will provide Snowflake with the foundational technology required to launch Snowflake Postgres—an enterprise-grade PostgreSQL database solution for its customer base and partners including Blue Yonder and LandingAI. The move further strengthens Snowflake's database portfolio in the evolving landscape of AI technology.
The new technology is scheduled to enter private preview in the near future.

I'm curious if this will lock in more users to Snowflake's ecosystem or actually open up better interoperability. 🤔 Kinda feels like another consolidation wave in data infra—hope it doesn't kill the open-source vibe.
